Mythology and Porn

Girls were attacked in various regions in India, over reasons like going to pubs and wearing jeans. Obviously wearing jeans is the top most sin in God’s book of sins by women.

Anyway, now the attacks have stopped because in the words of Pramod Mutalik

“the method used was wrong, but the objective was correct”.

If you read the whole article, you will see he also said

“Our women are talented, and we should encourage them. But nudity, dancing and drinking liquor is not our culture. Also, it’s not just drinking, there is a drug and sex mafia behind all this. It’s an international conspiracy to destroy Indian culture. These western countries are behind this conspiracy. They introduced the pub culture into India. They brought AIDS, orphanages and old age homes, which is not part of our culture. Our culture upholds family values. In the US and England, 32% of pregnant girls are unmarried teens.”

Had he read the mythology books that I did in my childhood, I wonder whether he’d still be blaming international conspiracies or in fact, have problems with half the “problems” in our society today.

Here’s a portion of a story about the God Agni (fire), which I swear I did not make up, but read in a mythology book once:

(There is an almost similar and almost entertaining narration over at http://www.windows.ucar.edu/tour/link=/mythology/krttika_pleiades.html)

Agni is flying by some random place on his way home, using is his super cool super powers. He sees the wives of the 7 rishis (saints). While the rishis are really old old men, the wives are really young. So even though these 7 women are married, Agni lusts for the 7 wives.

That is when he runs into Swaha (his future wife), who notes that he is quite distracted and sad. Swaha uses her super cool super powers to read his mind. She is not really happy to see his thoughts, but when there is super powers, nothing can keep you unhappy for long. Plus, she loves him way too much.

She decides to shape shift and transform herself (once again using her super cool super powers) into each of the wives one night after another, and she visits Agni, pretending to be the women Agni wanted to bed. But Swaha couldn’t transform herself into one rishi’s wife because that particular woman was truly loyal to her husband.

Still, Agni was happy because he believed that he managed to score 6 out of 7.

Meanwhile, Swaha gets pregnant.

(Not quite different from what’s happening today, eh?)

The only good lessons I can find in this story are:

1. Superpowers are always cool
2. Divorce is not always the answer
3. Always try to get good scores.

And to think this story is only the tip of the iceberg!

  1. Mythology itself says its myth.

Exactly! But you’re missing the point here. A bunch of people want our entire country to be based on myths, because they feel that is the only way forward!

  2. Yeah.. I havent missed the point you are referring to. But only wanted not to take the discussion any longer as you have already clarified the subject a lot.

The thing is, how do you define culture? When you say indian culture, do you mean hindu culture? Because, all this fuss that these people create, they always stick their asses to so called hindu culture. So are they going to force the Hindus to follow the ‘Indian’ culture or they are willing to force other communities as well? Cause, they can say that Churches and mosques were never a part of Hindu culture!

Then comes the authority. Who the hell are they to define the culture ? Who gives them the authority to define and force the people to be indian-cultured ?
Next is freedom. Why should somebody else decide what my lifestyle would be? I define my culture on my own. I live the way I want to. Why should I be bothered by somebody else until and unless my activities are not affecting others in any harmful manner?

And the next point is, what is Indian / Hindu culture ? Is it written somewhere that ‘these’ set of rules define hindu culture? Are they informed enough to decide what ancient hindu scriptures say? Do they have enough knowledge of mythology? What mythology are they following ? Every part of India has its own version of mythology. What version are they addressing to ? With time, all these theories changes. So do the theory of mythology and culture. Then on which basis they say that sticking to some hypothesis of some 10000 BC will let them go ahead?

The argument can still continue. The gist is that, the whole thing is pure bullshit. These are only the creation of idle and diseased brains. And the people who continue to swim in this flowing shit are mythologically pervert.

Whoa! That’s one big and informative comment!

  3. just one thing to edit – if its “Agni” and “Swaha” than instead of “super cool” powers it should be “super hot” powers.

Oh yeah, never thought of that!

  4. WOW!! That is the correct approach. See we should always pick the positive points and you have done exactly the same. The conclusion is quite informative and impressive, the superpowers are always supercool 😀
    Agreed.

Great minds think alike? Thanks 🙂

  5. Talk of good scores! … 🙂
    That’s my take-away from your post … like on a need-to-improve basis.

Score 1, Bonda! Way to go!!

  6. Agreed… I have always had quite a few questions on the myths and the fables I have chanced to read… Supposedly, they are to let us know what cannot work well… 🙂

I dont have anything against your view on the news cast – I wont disagree with dresses or life style or culture view points of today..though I must say, India’s pride and stance is not heading in the right direction.

Here’s what I had to say about this : http://dewdropdeepa.blogspot.com/2009/03/indias-pride-and-stance-today.html

    You write very well,
    🙂
    Keep writing,
    Dew

“India’s pride and stance is not heading in the right direction”
    Totally agree with that!

  7. Woah!
Nice one to get people talking!

All I can say about our and any otjer countries tradition is that-

Porn was always there and always will be.
Now we have “superstars” and “girls next doors” in our “porny” fantasies and long back I guess people fantasised about hunky half clad gods and semi nude sexy godesses. Maybe throw in a few popular Kings and Queens, some rebel princes/sses and you have what the ancients jerked off to.
Lets not define “our culture” by only these and see that people where always morally blind in one eye oe the other.

And congrats on the “previous entries” button. 🙂

    Haha…Good one!
